The Children's Cancer Run is better than ever in it's 31st year

The Children's Cancer Run is better than ever in it's 31st year

It’s that time of year again, when runners from across the region get together and take on the record-breaking five-mile fun-run in the name of children’s cancer research, and as always we had a great time spreading the word about the event in the run up to the big day.

From the families with a personal connection to the charity, to the schools with record numbers of participants, everyone has a story to share about why they’ve decided to take part in the Children’s Cancer Run, and it’s our job to make sure their stories are heard.

The run, which is sponsored by Greggs, took place on Sunday at Gosforth Park in Newcastle with approximately 9,000 runners braving the extremely muddy cross-country course to raise funds for North of England Children’s Cancer Research (NECCR).

Local ice hockey team The Tyneside Jesters started the race, forming a guard of honour at the start line complete with hockey sticks, before completing the run in full kit.

A colourful mix of runners of all ages took part, from seasoned athletes to fancy dress fun runners who completed the five miles with friends, family and colleagues alike.

After runners made it to the finish line they were rewarded with a commemorative t-shirt, a medal, and a picnic from Gregg’s The Bakers that they could enjoy whilst taking in the entertainment, provided by Metro Radio and a selection of local music and performance groups.

Coverage from across the region included stories from parents of children with cancer, schools taking part, and fantastic research developments, demonstrating where the funds raised go and the impact they have on the search for a cure.

A multimedia approach to raising the awareness of the run has secured coverage across multiple platfroms from local and regional press, to TV and radio slots and an overwhelming online presence across social media, blogs and news sites.

The consistent presence of the run and the charity in the press ensured that over 9000 runners took part on the day raising an estimated £200,000 in sponsorship, which will go directly to the NECCR.

The NECCR accept donations all year round, for more information visit www.neccr.org.uk   To keep up to date with NECCR events follow @NECCRrun on Twitter or visit the Run’s Facebook page.
