Licenses Now Available to Drill in Norway’s East Arctic

Norway has invited oil and gas firms to be the first to drill in its East Arctic waters this week.

The country is looking to tap further into reserves after its prospects in the North Sea fade, just as a 25-year low of oil production has been projected in 2013.

Interested firms have until January 2014 to nominate areas that they wish to explore, however there is only a limited number of blocks likely to be awarded in the eastern Barents Sea – an area the size of Switzerland.

Furthermore, while Norway and Russia ended a 40-year old dispute over their maritime borders back in 2010, some of the blocks available for license are likely to lie on the borders between the two countries, which according the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), will likely complicate eventual production and may even initiate trade wars between the nations.
