The Power of Facebook

Now this is a little weird but a true story that demonstrates the power and reach of social media, in this case, Facebook, and the longer term benefits of sponsorship.

Many moons ago, we began to sponsor Novos RFC, mainly because I‘d played for them and they’re a great bunch of people who believe in inclusive sport for all and are building a superb club, open to all, in Benton in the East end of Newcastle. One of the benefits of this sponsorship was that our logo appeared on a variety of media ranging from pitchside hoardings to training tops. The deal was a good value and we were and still are proud to be involved with the club.

So, fast forward a few years to Friday 2nd September when myself and a few of the Novos lads are watching the first Newcastle Falcons game at Kingston Park, a game, unbeknown to ourselves, that was shown on Australian TV…

Where, an ex-Novos player, Drew Henderson, is watching it and takes a screen shot of his TV picture when he sees a few familiar faces. It then goes onto the Novocastrians RFC Facebook page where he keeps in touch with his mates and is seen by another Novos player, Jean Paul (JP) Addison, in Texas, USA.

Now I’d love to say that JP immediately got in touch with ourselves with a marketing enquiry that led to a prestigious job, but unfortunately, he didn’t. 

But he did get in touch with us to say he recognised our (old) logo and comment on the best marketing agency and best amateur rugby club in the North East, and that’s good enough for me!
